Getting There
Getting Around
If you are staying in Reykjavic, many attractions are located in the downtown area and can be accessed by walking. However, if you want to explore the many amazing natural attractions that Iceland has to offer, you will either need to rent a car or book a trip with a tour guide that offers transportation.
RENTAL CARS
There are many rental car companies serving Iceland, and they will even meet you at the airport. The biggest decision to make is what type of vehicle to rent. If you will be staying in and near the city, or only on the paved roads around the perimeter of Iceland (the Ring Road), a compact or 2WD vehicle is fine. If you will be venturing into the interior or onto the gravel and unpaved roads, you will need a vehicle with 4WD. Roads including an "F" in the name are roads requiring 4WD.
Note that gasoline is expensive in Iceland (can range as high as $8USD per gallon). So, if you will be driving a lot, fuel cost will need to be factored into your budget.
Rental insurance is optional and is a good idea in case the car sustains any damage due to rock strikes or other unexpected incidents.
Information on driving in Iceland can be found at http://www.road.is. The site is also continuously updated with road conditions. You can also find web camera feeds to see conditions for yourself.
